Fired By Hamlet is rooted in Commedia’dell Arte and as the name suggests, in Shakespeare. Dell’arte is a form of theatre characterized by the usage of masks which began in Italy and was responsible for the advent of improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios. It is one of the most popular forms of theatre globally, and one of the most difficult to pull off.

German director Moritz uses the company of travelling actors in the play to talk about journeys made in hope. After finding out that they’re broke and out of shows, the actors decide to try their luck in the court of Prince Hamlet of Denmark. As the play unfolds, we find them struggling for food and fame. They share with us their aspirations, ambitions, hopes and fears.

The play opens with the characters asleep under a bedsheet. Only their feet are visible. This is when they display the first signs of struggle by pulling the sheet this way and that to cover themselves and leave others cold. “In Commedia, every character is looking for his advantage. In Fired by Hamlet, the characters are not hungry, they are dying of hunger,” says Moritz. (Source: Indian Express)

The play boasts of many different elements to keep you engaged, from genres to archetypes to masks to slapstick to physicality. We recommend that you don’t miss out on this treat from Moritz at Epicentre, Gurgaon. See you there!
