Spaces is the prestigious Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation’s latest production in line with the true tradition of its heritage- theatre that is original and flavoured with the myriad nuances of Hyderabad. A tribute to the completion of 10 years of global excellence by the Foundation, it is based on a short story by writer and actor Noor Baig, who also plays the protagonist Aziza.

In a huge leap forward for Indian theatre, Spaces was invited for international staging at the Chicago Theatre (the biggest off-Broadway theatre icon in the US) and the Metropolitan Theatre in Turkey. But staying true to its roots, the Foundation arranged an exclusive preview at Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad on the occasion of World Heritage Day (18th April, 2015) which garnered an overwhelming response. In his own way, Mohammad Ali Baig (founder of the Foundation), is bridging the gap between tradition and modernity which, incidentally, is also the theme of this play.

Set in an old haveli, the story shows the artist Aziza hanging on to the symbol of her rich heritage by a thread while her Chicago-based fiancé Javed (played by Mohammad) tries to convince her to leave the past in the past and move on. Reluctant to give up the last remnants of her rich lineage, Aziza is faced with a crucial decision- whether to hold on to her precious childhood memories or let go.

Spaces is replete with the authenticity and essence of Hyderabad and highlights its old-world charm while depicting a contrast with the modern-day travails of a growing city. It is not just about geographical or physical spaces, it is also about what home means to people- a question that every individual is faced with at some point in life.
