Man vs woman, now that’s a laugh

Times Of India, Gurgaon

Men and women can’t live with each other, and yet can’t do without. The ideal premise, one would think, for a philosophical debate. But even better, it makes for an excellent theme for an evening’s entertainment.

So the eternal Men-are-from-Mars-Women-are-from-Venus question got another airing, this time a chuckle-eliciting hour-and-a-bit of stand-up comedy, enjoyed by a full house. This was the latest in the ‘Times LOL Tuesdays at Epicentre’, presented by the Times of India in association with the Grandmasters of Comedy.

In Amit Tandon, a “poor married male comedian,” and Neeti Palta, a “sarcastic, hyper female comedian,” the ingredients were there for a piquant casserole of a comedy. And neither of them disappointed.

Tandon introduced himself as someone “produced by my mother and directed by my wife,” and referenced Chetan Bhagat’s ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’ ‘ his wife and two kids ‘ to describe his predicament. What followed was a spicy battle of the sexes, the action toing and froing between the two protagonists like any of those circuitous husband-and-wife arguments that end up going nowhere.

There were breezy send-ups on celebrity couples(and why it’s pointless trying to aspire to be them), and a hilarious sketch called ‘I don’t understand’, where Tandon and Palta explained what men don’t ‘get’ about women (and vice-versa). ‘Let’s talk’ elaborated on what transpires when those two dreaded words are mentioned.

The pair also got two couples from the audience to come on the stage (and reveal secrets about each other), before, in an uproarious finale, improvising on situations suggested by members of the audience (sample: Tandon as Sachin Tendulkar, Palta as Nita Ambani!).
