It’s a laugh riot as stand-up comedy opens new chapter

Stand Up Comedy at Epicentre Gurgaon

Stand Up Comedy

It was the first Tuesday night of many, and those who turned up didn’t go home disappointed.

Stand-up comedy grabbed the limelight as Times LOL Tuesdays at Epicentre’ got off to a rip-roaring start. The Times of India is presenting the series in association with the Grandmasters of Comedy.

And there was no let-up in the hilarity as Amit Tandon (the host), Abijit Ganguly, Nishant Suri and Jeeveshu Ahluwalia brought their unique (and occasionally racy) brand of humour to the stage. All these four are stars in an Indian stand-up scene that continues to buzz with energy.

Tandon, the host with the most, got things under way in the understated manner one has come to associate with him. That innocent face is misleading, hiding as it does a mischievous streak (and that’s what brings the guffaws out), and his send-ups on and around the Indian family evoked much mirth.

Ganguly many would have been introduced to through Youtube (via his sensational Indian Mid-Twenties Issue, Parents & Marriage’ video). And he didn’t disappoint on the night, using his life, as a Bengali brought up in a hardcore Punjabi environment (Delhi, of course), as a peg for his act. Work and girlfriends, too, got a fair bit of witty airplay.

With Suri, the tone shifted from soft-spoken Bong to Punjabi-brash. Suri, one of the latest funnymen to join the stand-up party (he also doubles up as a wedding photographer), was louder, and unapologetically in-your-face. He took mock aim at the IIT crowd and made friendly fun of the Army life (besides taking on other topics).

Ahluwalia’s gags generated the most laughter. Short and stocky, the Gurgaon-based Ahluwalia played up his size and tubbiness, directing barbs at those who direct barbs at him for being fat and getting plenty of LOLs in response. His droll observations on the everyday humdrum (and everyday NCR Punjabi) had the audience in splits.
