The place to be on August 15

August 13, 2012, Deccan Herald

In today’s busy lives, the holiday on Independence Day i.e August 15 in the middle of the week often begins late. The lazy mood lingers on and the family complains- kids gets angry if one doesn’t accompany them for kite flying and wife gets upset if she isn’t taken for shopping.

The answer to all these is to head to Epicentre, Gurgaon where everyone in the family can celebrate freedom in their own way during the ‘Independence Day Carnival’.

The day long celebrations will be inaugurated from 10 am onwards with Flag hoisting and National Anthem that will last till 11.30 am. The focus will then shift to fun activities such as kite flying which will have Bhai Miyan (Limca book of records holder), who will fly 150 kites on a single string. The kiteflying session will go on till 8 pm and provide a chance to not just kids but even adults, to revive their childhood hobby in a competitive spirit and shout ‘I Bo Re!’

While the kids can remain busy with kites, the shopaholics can head to the handicrafts display and sale in collaboration with Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India Ltd. and to the Flea Market which will be set up by Great Indian Bazaar.

The young adults are surely in for a treat since they will have a Kids’ Zone which will invite best Science projects from 10 schools of Delhi and a Fancy Dress competition along side, from 11 am to 1 pm. In addition to this, there will also be an Inter-school skit competition from 11 am to 6 pm and a Potter’s Wheel, followed by a competition for kids of Pottery Painting till 8 pm.

Since there is something for all then how can the foodies be left behind? Traditional Indian foods like biryani, kebabs, South Indian, Kashmiri including popular street food along with Kids’ favourite menu – burger, pizzas, candyfloss, pop corns and much more will be on till the spirit of August 15 keeps alive.

For those who want to utilise the vacation in learning, they can get themselves enrolled in workshops such as ‘Live Art on canvas’ with Ashim Gogoi, Devender Ghosh and Sunil Basu, Rubik’s Cube workshop by Denil Vira, Beading curtains and weaving mats workshop by Yuti- Exploring Culture.

The second half of the day can be enjoyed over the popular Bollywood film Stanley Ka Dabba by Amole Gupte. To top it all, there will be a gala Bollywood Night. This Bollywood evening of dance and music will start with Kathak’s relevance in Bollywood today, composed and directed by Pt. Birju Maharaj, which will be performed by students of Kalashram and will be followed by Modern Music in Ballet form. The night will also have a sensational performance by Mauli Dave, finalist of TV show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge’ 2007.

Mauli says, “It always feels great to perform on such an inspirational day. I am really excited to perform on our Independence day and look forward to a great evening of patriotism and fun.” She also informed, “I’ll be singing a variety of Bollywood songs both old and new along with a few patriotic songs with respect to this day. Love to all and hope to see you there!”
